Learning Management System Assessment ProcessesThis is a featured page

A Learning Management System is designed to maximize the potential of the students. Assessment is a fundamental aspect of this that is both unavoidable and important. However, accurate assessment must take into consideration the overall goals of the curriculum as well as the individual learning processes of the students in order to reach the maximum potential for success possible.

If the assessment process takes into consideration the primary needs of the student it stands to be more successful in the long run. These needs such as formative assessment and learning strategies, quality assurance standards of the learning institution and societal concerns such as employment requirements should be addressed.

Assessment in a Learning Management System influences the standard of learners produced. The method and frequency of testing should be evaluated to ensure effectiveness. If tests occur too often it does not give students the time to contemplate the material given. Multiple choice and rote recitation of content turns potentially deep learners into surface learners.

Both scenarios work to the detriment of the student. Unfortunately these testing processes have greatly influenced the way the curriculum and teaching methods are outlined overall. However, changes in how assessment is developed can have a positive influence on a student. Making the material more relatable to the student’s every day life and the assessment more appealing can turn a negative learning environment into a positive one.

The Learning Management System can be customized and adapted to the individual to allow for various learning styles. Instead of relying on estimated group data, the data accumulated by assessment can be used by teachers to attain accurate information on the individual so distinct formats can be used. Correct answers can be provided after individual tasks are completed.

Teachers are recognizing the value in the changes from traditional assessment methods. New techniques are becoming more popular and are being more commonly used. However, it is important to note that these changes are not really new concepts but simply enhancements to existing systems. They should not be used to the exclusion of traditional methods in a Learning Management System but instead worked into the curriculum as another tool to achieve successful curriculum goals.
